Ethisphere는 2007년부터 '세계에서 가장 윤리적인 기업들(WME, World's Most Ethical Companies Ranking)'을 선정해왔다. 금번 6회째를 맞는 WME는 최근 2012년 선정기업이 발표되었는데 총 145개의 기업이 수상의 영예를 안았다. (아래 리스트 참조)
이 중에는 Aflac, Americal Express, General Electric, Milliken & Company, Patagonia, Rabobank, Starbucks 등을 포함한 총 23개의 기업이 6년 연속으로 Honoree에 선정되기도 했다.
'기업의 시민정신(Corporation Citizenship)'이나 '일하기 좋은 직장(Best Workplace to Work)' 등과 같은 선별 방식과 비교되는 차별점이라면,
대부분 이러한 순위들이 제약업종, 컨설팅 및 하이테크 회사, 소수의 리테일 회사 등 편중된 산업에서 소수 업체가 중복적으로 선정되었던 반면, 본 ranking은 36개 이상의 다양한 산업에 걸쳐 있고, 선정된 145개의 기업 중 43개의 기업이 미국 이외의 지역에 본사를 두고 있어 전세계의 기업들을 대상으로 한다는 특징이 있다. (아쉽게도 한국 기업은 전혀 Honoree에 들어가지 않았다.)
또 본 순위에서는 기업의 규모에도 큰 의미를 두고 있는데, 해당업계에서 윤리적인 리더십(Ethical Business Leadership)으로 동종 기업들을 선도하기 위해서는 일정한 영향력을 행사할 수 있어야 한다는 것을 염두에 두기 때문이다. 때문에 동사가 강조하는 Ethical Business Leadership의 4가지 주요 항목은 'Good, Smart, Business, Profit' 이다. (왼쪽 표 참조)
이들은 선정하는 절차는 먼저 Nomination의 절차를 거친 후 Ethics Quotient (EQ) Survey라는 Ethisphere고유의 조사과정을 실시하여 이를 통한 분석과 검증 후 최종 선정자를 산출하는 방식으로 진행된다.
이 EQ의 프레임워크는 5개의 카테고리로 이뤄지며 각 항목 및 가중치는 다음과 같다.
1. Ethics and Compliance Program (25%)
2. Reputation, Leadership and Innovation (20%)
3. Governance (10%)
4. Corporate Citizenship and Responsiblity (25%)
5. Culture of Ethics (20%)

2012-WME-Questionnaire-BLANK.pdf또한 2007년부터 2011년까지 WME기업중 상장된(거래가능한 기업들)의 전체 주가와 S&P 500의 주가지수를 비교해 보면 시장을 크게 상회(outperform)하고 있는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 이를 통해 간접적으로 ESG점수가 높은 기업들, 혹은 SRI의 투자방식이 장기적으로 우수한 수익을 실현할 수 있음을 보여주는 하나의 유용한 사례라 하겠다. (이미 SRI업계에 몸담고 계신 분들은 이런 결과가 이제는 너무나 당연해서 식상할 때도 된 것 같다.^^) 특기할 만한 것은 경기 침체와 회복 시에 시장지수보다 주가가 덜 빠지고 회복은 훨씬 더 빨랐다는 점이다. 이는 윤리적인 기업들에 보다 우호적인 기업환경이 형성되어 있다는 이야기일 수도 있고, 또다른 관점에서는 윤리적인 기업들은 장기적으로는 시장 전체에 비해 더욱 높은 성장을 보여준다는 것을 의미하는 것일 수도 있다.
